Gregory - Benjamin F.

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Thursday, 19 March 1874

Hon. Benj. F. Gregory, well known in all this region as one of the leading citizens of Warren County, and with an extensive acquaintance throughout the state, died at his residence in Williamsport last Saturday evening, March 7, of nervous prostration after four months’ illness.

His age was 57 years, 9 months and 6 days. He leaves a wife and two grown sons—John, editor of the Williamsport Republican, and B. R., a dry goods dealer of that place.

Mr. Gregory will be sadly missed in old Warren, where he has been for so many years a leading spirit. We are without such data concerning him as we would like, and which his prominence and character would merit. He had lived in Fountain and Warren Counties for many years and was in his young days a school teacher here. He afterward entered the profession of law, wherein he remained to the time of his death. He was also engaged in cattle and land trading and amassed a fortune. He served as Treasurer of Warren County and either two or three terms in the lower house of the State Legislature, where he was a prominent and active member. This was during a part of the war. His patriotism was sturdy and unflagging, and he will be long remembered in Warren County for his zeal in the good cause. He lived and died a member of the M. E. Church. At the last Republican Congressional nominating convention for the District, his county put him forward as their candidate, but the leadership fell to another, and sound old Ben went to work with a will in his proud “Banner County.”

We well remember his consistent and oft repeated wish for harmony and his saying that the party was greater than any man. He was a Republican by nature, instinct and training, and believed in his party with a faith amounting to devotion.—Attica Ledger - thanks "S"
